One way to make your weekly grocery budget stretch farther is not to buy any thing you can make yourself. And you will be amazed at what you can make yourself, in little or no time.

One thing that I found I can make myself that rather surprised me was pancake syrup. Unless you buy pure maple syrup, all pancake syrup is sugar, water, some flavorings and a whole bunch of chemicals. The only thing I don’t stock in my kitchen is the chemicals and that is not a bad thing.

Pancake Syrup

Ingredients
1 cup brown sugar
A little less than 1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp maple flavoring, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, you can really get creative with your flavorings

In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring the mixture to a boil. Turn the heat to medium and simmer, two to three  minutes.  It may take a few batches to figure out just how long to simmer it to get the consistency you like. Keep in mind the syrup will thicken as it cools.
